Dr. Karen J. Leong Receives Two Awards in Two Months
for Her Contributions in Education

Dr. Karen J. Leong, an Associate Professor in Women & Gender Studies and an afflilate faculty with Asian Pacific American Studies,
was recently the recipient of two awards.

Susanne Shafer Award
The Arizona Council for the Social Studies awarded Dr. Leong the Susanne Shafer Award for Outstanding Contributions to Women’s Studies in Arizona on October 23 at their annual meeting held at ASU West. This award honors the lifetime dedication of Susanne Shafer to the field of Social Science.

The award recognizes a social studies educator who has enabled students to understand the role of women in society, stimulated professional development in the field of women's studies, encouraged educational programs highlighting women's studies in schools and
communities, and demonstrated educational excellence and exhibited high degrees of professionalism in thefield of women's studies.

Arizona Asian American Association Award
On September 26, the Arizona Asian American Association honored Dr. Leong with an award for Outstanding Contribution to Education at their 21st Annual “Circle of Excellence” Awards Banquet.

This award recognizes an individual or organization that provides outstanding education about Asia or Asian American history or culture. The recipient is chosen from among K-12 teachers, Arizona college or university faculty, museums or other education-related organizations.
